It has been a very very long time since I used salt dough but I always remember it as a very fun thing, it still is! For a day camp I was asked to do a sculpting activity with the kids yesterday and we had lots of fun first making the dough (fun yah but oh, what a mess!!!) and then making some nice projects with it.
The bakery theme was popular, pretzels, buns, croissants,
'Monkey eating watermelon', I think this one is pretty brilliant!
Salt dough recipe:
1 cup salt
2 cups flour
1 cup water
1 teaspoon oil
Mix flour and salt, add water and oil, mix well. If too wet add some flour, if too dry dip your fingers in water and knead, repeat till it is the right consistency. If it is just slightly too sticky, carefully roll it in some flour and knead till right. Now you have white dough, for coloured salt dough, divide in balls and add a few drops of food colouring in the middle and mix well. This requires some patience!
Now make anything you want out f it.
Let dry for a few hours and bake in a regular oven for 2-4 hours on 110 degrees celsius
Paint or varnish your piece.
